Why It Rocks

1. Funny and over-the-top one-liners from each of the nine playable characters (as well as other characters like Merasmus and the Mann Brothers).
2. Decent graphics. The game uses stylized, cartoonish graphics which are often compared to Pixar movies.
3. When the game was originally released on Steam, it cost about $20, but after the release of Meet the Medic, it was made free-to-play, significantly increasing the game's user base.
4. The classes are well-known for each having their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as having distinct personalities and being designed so they can be identified simply by their outlines. Here are all of the game's nine classes.
   • Offense
     1. Scout: He runs faster than the other classes, can capture control points and push payloads twice as fast, and he can double-jump. He is usually armed with a sawn-off shotgun known as a Scattergun that is incredibly powerful at close range, and can also become immune to damage by drinking Bonk! Atomic Punch, though he is unable to use his weapons while Bonk is active.
     2. Soldier: He can use his Rocket Launcher both to kill enemies, as well as use a technique known as 'Rocket Jumping', which allows you jump higher than normal and gives you greater mobility if you're skilled enough. He also has a Shotgun for finishing off enemies.
     3. Pyro: They use a flamethrower, which is often used by players to find and defeat cloaked spies, which is known as 'Spychecking' and can use an airblast to push enemies back or deflect projectiles. They can also equip a variety of wacky weapons, such as shotguns, flare guns, a jetpack, a fire axe, a neon sign, and even a giant lollipop. The Pyro's identity has been the subject of intense debate, as Valve made their gender intentionally ambiguous; fans can't agree as to whether the Pyro is male, female, a robot built by the Engineer, or any other insane theories that have been thrown around over the years.
   • Defense
     1. Demoman: He uses his Grenade and Stickybomb Launchers to set traps to outsmart his opponents by 'blasting them into thin gruel', as he himself said it. He's also an alcoholic and has some of the funniest lines in the game.
     2. Heavy: He uses his Minigun to kill his enemies in a matter of seconds, can use a Sandvich to restore his health, has 300 base health, and also has some of the best lines in the game.
     3. Engineer: He can build Sentry Guns to kill enemies without having to do it himself, Dispensers to restore his and his teammate's Health and Ammunition, and Teleporters to help him and his teammates get from Point A to Point B much quicker. Any of these buildings can be upgraded up to three times.
   • Support
     1. Medic: He uses his Medigun to heal teammates as well as 'Übercharge', which gives them a temporary boost in strength and makes them invulnerable to damage. He is the biggest asset to any team and, when paired with the already powerful Heavy, can become a force to be reckoned with. Sadly, though, he is rare in Casual games these days due to players seemingly having a concerning amount of arrogance, believing they can take on the entire enemy team without a healer; this more often than not gets them killed, and a team without a Medic tends to be a losing team.
     2. Sniper: He uses his trusty Sniper Rifle to snipe at enemies from afar. He can also coat enemies in 'Jarate', which causes all damage they receive to be registered as mini-crits. He can be very deadly if used correctly.
     3. Spy: The Spy is one of the most dangerous characters in the game, and for good reason. He can turn invisible, disguise himself as an enemy teammate, and backstab opponents, which kills them instantly. He is perhaps the hardest class to play these days, since his disguise kit doesn't really work anymore due to players being incredibly paranoid, not to mention many of his weapons that were once essential have been nerfed into the ground and rendered borderline-unviable.
5. You can customize the classes in various ways using hats, weapons, taunts, and other cosmetic items. You can either pay for these items in the Mann Co. Store (with real money) or receive them through random drops.
6. Many different weapons to choose from for each class, each with their own unique stats, advantages, and witty descriptions.
7. A very loyal fanbase that supports and promotes the game by creating fan vids/machinima, new cosmetics to potentially add to the game, and custom maps, which can now be installed via Steam Workshop.
8. After the release of Garry's Mod, people have made countless videos featuring TF2 characters with said game (among other properties, Valve or otherwise).
9. Items can be found in a variety of qualities, each with their own gimmick and color (different grades can be mixed together, for example a Haunted Strange cosmetic):
   1. Normal (grey) are the weapons you get by default when you first install the game; also known as Stock
   2. Unique (yellow) are normal items you get via the drop system, by crafting, or through microtransactions; these include weapons, cosmetics, crafting items, and crates
   3. Strange (orange) are weapons and cosmetics that track certain stats; a typical strange weapon tracks your kills, but you can put Strange parts on to track other stats (like how many times you've killed a certain class); as you rack up kills with Strange weapons, the Strange name will change, from Unremarkable to Sufficiently Lethal to Rage-Inducing, the highest rank being Hale's Own for racking up 8,500 kills
   4. Vintage (blue) indicates an item obtained prior to the Mann-Conomy Update on September 30, 2010
   5. Genuine (green) indicates an exclusive item received for purchasing another game on Steam, usually an item that is thematically appropriate, such as a cape for Demoman for purchasing Medieval II: Total Warfare or Batman cosmetics for Heavy for purchasing Batman: Arkham City; weapons obtainable in this quality usually drop via the item system in Unique quality
   6. Unusual (purple) are items with a special attached particle effect; they don't really add anything to the game (if anything, they make it easy for Snipers to find and kill enemy Snipers), and are just for bragging rights; the primary way to obtain an Unusual is to unbox it (these crates can only be opened with a key from the in-game store, which will set you back $2.49), though there is one hat (the World Traveler's Hat) can be obtained by purchasing map stamps (these stamps directly support content creators, and are dirt-cheap at 99 cents each); a special particle effect will be applied to the hat on any map you have purchased a stamp for
   7. Haunted (turquoise) are cosmetic items that are restricted to Halloween events or periods when the moon is full in real-life; otherwise, nothing sets them apart from Unique items
   8. Collector's (red) are items created using Chemistry Sets that randomly drop; aside from the title, they have no effect beyond bragging rights and better sell prices in the trade economy
   9. Decorated (white) are weapons with with special grade factors of design, varying levels of exterior wear, and possibly a Strange counter and/or Unusual effect; they are mainly for cosmetic effect to give your otherwise bland weapons a bit more flair
   10. Community (light green) is applied to items that Valve has given specifically to users who have made a significant contribution to the game
   11. Self-Made (light green) is similar to Community, only it is given to the person who made said item in the first place
   12. Valve (violet) are intentionally-overpowered weapons that only Valve staff have access to; only one Valve weapon exists, the Valve Rocket Launcher, used by Robin Walker only upon request, and even then only as a joke; other Valve weapons once existed, but were deleted
10. V (purple) are cosmetics (and in a few cases, weapons) with a special attached particle effect; these are highly-sought after since they can usually only be obtained by opening crates (which can only be opened by obtaining a key from the in-game store for $2.49); their only real alve has made various animated shorts, such as the 'Meet the Team' series, to promote the game. Two shorts for community updates (such as 'End of the Line' and 'Invasion') were made by members of the community and are officially endorsed by Valve.
11. After the release of Meet the Pyro, Valve released their animation software, Source Filmmaker, for people to make their own animations with (TF2 or otherwise). Valve even holds an annual event called 'The Saxxy Awards', in which fans create videos with SFM (as long as they are made using Valve IPs such as TF2, Portal, Dota, etc.) and submit them for a chance to win a Saxxy.
12. It does microtransactions right, in that you aren't forced to pay your way to victory (as the game is about skill, not item stats). Rather, microtransactions are for things like hats, weapons, taunts, other cosmetic items, keys to open cates that randomly drop, and the occasional item allowing you to take on contracts that grant even bigger rewards. Because of this, as well as the trading and crafting systems, a surprisingly-complex and at times cutthroat trade economy has formed, with dedicated community servers set up specifically for trading (as well as farming achievements, leveling weapons and cosmetics with the 'Strange' quality, and socializing with other players; these achievement/trade/idle maps often have some rather-humorous easter eggs and downright-nonsensical designs, and are always fun to play). And if that feels daunting, you can often find many items you'd have to pay top dollar for on Steam's Community Market, often for dirt-cheap (for example, a Strange Scattergun that would cost $2.49 to unbox after paying for a key to open the crate often costs even less on the marketplace, allowing you to be a cheap bastard and come away with what you want without breaking the bank or getting; conversely, a Strange Machina would cost you about the same amount of refined metal due to how scarce they are, only being available in a certain crate series that didn't see wide distrubition and no longer randomly drops).

Bad Qualities

1. The console versions aren't supported by Valve anymore (surprisingly they're still active, albeit with only a few players). The Xbox 360 version's reason makes sense since Microsoft forced Valve to make paid DLC along with Left 4 Dead (which had maps that came out for free on PC).
2. The PS3 version is almost unplayable. Thankfully, a patch was later released to fix the issues, but it still has many of the bugs and exploits long since patched out of the PC version, due to the fact Valve had no say in the PS3 versions development; instead, Electronic Arts was in charge of the port, and they had bigger priorities than developing a game for a company whose Steam platform directly competes with their own Origin platform.
3. The game nowadays doesn't get major updates very often since 2014, and there are often huge gaps between major updates. For example, the recent Jungle Inferno update took 400+ days to come out.
4. The optimization is worse than most Source games, and the game doesn't run well on lower-end systems anymore due to SteamPipe making the requirements more demanding, but for a fix, you have to append to a command like '-DXLEVEL' to be set to 80! However, it is not as bad as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
5. The matchmaking in the game is horrendous. Before Meet Your Match, there was a Quick Play system where you could just jump in and play (though more often than not, you could expect to be put in an empty server). However, it was released with an awful matchmaking system. This update also introduced Competitive, which is a game mode that has awful matchmaking queue times, and this also made maps more focused on a competitive experience than maps that players can just jump into and play. Worst of all, Meet Your Match was seemingly released as a kneejerk response to Overwatch (even though that game never posed much of a threat because much of its playerbase plays both games), and therefore not given the development time it needed.
6. Most Valve official servers have more Pyros due to the Jungle Inferno update. However, the respective class was luckily nerfed in March of 2018.
7. Hackers are ruining the game and not getting permaban due to how sophisticated hacking programs have become in being able to circumvent the Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) system.
8. 'Friendly' players who join a capture-the-flag server, refuse to fight the enemy, and in some cases, go out of their way to obstruct players trying to play the objective, with the goal of turning the server into what is essentially a trade server, with any player trying to play the objective being called a 'fun-hating tryhard' or any number of different insults, and often finding themselves on the receiving end of a frivolous votekick simply for playing the game the way it was designed; this is not at all what an actual friendly acts like, as they laugh off being killed, while CTF 'friendlies' are merely trolls who are very, very good at playing the Wounded Gazelle card to garner sympathy and turn whole servers against anyone who doesn't agree with their playstyle. This has spawned a never-ending flamewar between friendlies and tryhards full of circular arguments that goes nowhere, and will most likely rage on until the day the game is shut down.

Controversy

Before the infamous Short-Circuit bug was patched, there was a drama that famous YouTuber King Raja Games claimed that exploiters and griefers Delfy and NISLT are the reason why TF2 is dying due to him releasing the griefing videos (though NISLT also releases videos of players pulling off incredible feats and impossible shots). Shortly after, Muselk tries to settle this out then Delfy made a statement in his videos that his videos 'clean' TF2 but this was later all debunked by YouTuber MediExcalibur2012 as he states that Delfy did not tell any of the makers about the various bugs in the map, and that he stated that helps the makers know the glitches and that sigsegv was the real hero of TF2.

Days after the Jungle Inferno update, Delfy discovered new glitches and posted in his channel. Later, a bunch of YouTubers made videos that Delfy is the 'cancer' of TF2 as some believe that he's the one that spreads the glitches around as his video gets a lot of views and he shows you how to do it step by step.
