Taking around an hour to play through, When The Darkness Comes feels like you’re wandering around a glitchy hard drive full of abstract dreams and beautiful nightmares. It has a Stanley Parable-esqe narrator, which initially makes it feel like a comedic game, but it soon starts to take a darker tone as you travel down the bizarre broken rabbit hole that explores themes of isolation, depression and social anxiety. Most of it could be described as a “walking simulator”, but there’s a lot of interaction and along the way there are puzzle elements and even a little platforming to contend with.

It’s a remarkable experience that’s full of breathtaking imagery, fourth wall breaking humor and interesting surprises (especially if you play through more than once). A beautiful and bizarre collection of contemplative digital dreamscapes. Highly recommended.
