Hey, HAPERSMION and others, think outside the DOSbox:
Consider saving your game in town after clearing out each level.
Each time you save that game, exit the game and make a copy of that MORIA.SAV file.
Rename that copy something like MORIA.D##
D will indicate Dad's saved games.
S will indicate Son's saved games.
If you think about it, you can sequentially name each of the save files, replacing ## with characters from 01 to ZZ -- giving you each potentially up to 675 save files -- does Moria even have that many levels?
Before you start (continue) playing again, look at the directory and find the latest dates for each MORIA.S## and MORIA.D## file. Make a copy of YOUR most-recently-saved file and rename it MORIA.SAV
Yes, you'll be overwriting the most-recently-saved game file.
As usual, when the game starts up, it will use the default MORIA.SAV file automatically. If a person fails to make a back-up copy of his/her .SAV file after exiting the game, he/she can only blame himself/herself if there is a resulting loss of time/energy/progress.

Included in the DOS download I found several saved games: GOD, ORC2 and MORIACHR.DIE. If you want to try any of them just copy and rename to 'MORIA.SAV'.
I've been looking for a guide that lists details such as weapon and spell damage. Also effects of stats like how intelligence determines mana points per level for a mage. If you find anything please post where to find it.

To load custom saved file name. Just change the filename to moria.sav before loading dosbox. moria.sav file is consumed once loaded.

I first played moria in junior high school at my friends house. It was the closest thing to dungeons and dragons that we could play by ourselves other than ultima and wizardry and might and magic! Awesome game. Fundamental role playing computer game.

I've found that if I save my game without specifying a name, just leaving it blank so that it uses the default MORIA.SAV, it will load up automatically. But I still can't figure out how to name a saved game (so that my son and I can have our own characters) and then still load it. Phorce1 said 'moria [pathtosavefile]', but when I do that, it starts up moria but then tells me 'Cannot stat file [pathtosavefile]' and drops back to the C: prompt. Does anyone know how to load a named save?

Saving the game depends on making a game folder, and putting your config there.
So for instance, I run windows, dosbox, and have c:dosgames
My game is in c:dosmoria
I mount c: c:dos
And that works for me. You do need to create the folder and copy the config file over. It was all explained in the handy documentation with the game.

I have the same problem as Ragwafire, I can save a game, but then never go back to it. How do I load a game? No point playing it if I can't continue a game. Starting over each time sucks big time.

Killing the Balrog is not that difficult. Use two rings of speed and a staff of speed. Then get into a medium-to-big room and use a 'wand of wall' in diagonals to create a checkers board-like room. I mean space-wall-space-wall.
Wait for the Balrog. Finally, when the Balrog gets at you side (in a wall location) you hit the Balrog, then go back one space, then hit again, then back another space. The Balrog will always be in one 'wall' location, and will never have the chance to attack you.
Make sure you have enoug food to eat, cause you won't have time to create food. Make sure you have a great sword. Also make sure your staff of speed is charged. Hit it around 50 times, and you'll kill it.
That's it!
